PORT PIRIE & SURROUNDS


JACKA BROTHER’S BREWERY

With panoramic views of the Southern Flinders Ranges, and dedicated to showcasing the best of local produce the ground floor of the Brewery Tower is now home to the new ‘Taphouse’ of the Mid North.

PICHI RICHI HISTORIC RAIL

Only an hour and 20 minutes from Milcowie B&B to Quorn. You can enjoy a full-day or half-day trip aboard a restored steam or heritage diesel train on the original Ghan route between Port Augusta and Quorn on the Pichi Richi Railway.

ALLIGATOR GORGE

A full days experience with an hour and 20 minute drive via the National Highway to the Mount Remarkable National Park. Surprisingly, there are no alligators in Alligator Gorge but there are spectacular views. You will view goannas, emus, kookaburras, echidna, Australian ringneck parrots and wedge-tailed eagles

MELROSE

In the shadow of Mount Remarkable, Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Rangers.  . There are multiple hikes and tracks within Mount Remarkable with the summit hike being a major attraction.  

HANCOCK’S LOOKOUT 

Lying just 49km south of Quorn off Horrocks Pass Road this is a great place to stop for the night. Free camping is allowed for one night only between the months of April until October. From the vantage point you can look over Spencer Gulf, Port Bonython, Whyalla, Port Augusta and part of the lower Flinders Ranges.

TELOWIE GORGE

30 minutes drive from Milcowie B&B is this stunning gorge, a home to numerous plants and wildlife. A serene and colourful experience not to be missed. Take your camera and a bottle of water and spend anything from an hour to the whole day - even grab a picnic lunch.

PORT PIRIE 

A city and coastal port, Port Pirie is a 20 minute drive from Milcowie. Founded in 1845, it has a population of 14200 people. It has a relaxed lifestyle and unspoilt surroundings with extensive facilities, including delicious eateries and attractions such as Shaka the Shark. There is also an excellent community pool. Visit the Port Pirie market every second Sunday of the month.

BRIDLE TRACK

ICONIC TRACK FOR THE 4X4 ENTHUSIAST

The Bridle Track is a popular four wheel drive track which commences ten kilometres west of Melrose…40 minute drive from Milcowie Farmhouse.
Beautiful, challenging drive through and atop of the Flinders Rangers with spectacular views of Spencer Gulf and surrounds. And best of all - it’s free!

CRYSTAL BROOK 

HOME TO THE FAMOUS CRYSTAL BROOK PASTIE!

A fifteen-minute drive, Crystal Brook is a quiet, rural service centre with a comprehensive Foodland. There is a self-guided walking tour showing the towns unique and historic family homes, 2.8 km round trip. Check out the big goanna, promoting the historic bake house museum, and stop at Kupsch Bakery for a pastie, known as ‘the world's best’. 

LAURA

SMALL TOWN..BIG HEART

20 minutes from Milcowie, Laura is a rural town with a population of 650 people. Discovered in 1842, a farmer named the town after his wife. Laura boasts having the Golden North Ice Cream factory where ice cream was first produced in 1923. While you visit the many other attractions, including the Stone Hut Bakery, Courthouse gallery, Laura archives, Rail Trail, stop and grab some ice cream from the local IGA. Yum!

WIRRABARA

Nestled on the banks of the rocky river, the area was first settled in 1844. It is an ideally county town, home of the first established Government Forest nursery in 1877. The Wirrabara Producers Market is held on the third Sunday of every month from 8:30am to midday offering the best of Southern Flinders regional produce direct to customers. A 35 minute drive from Milcowie.

MAMBRAY CREEK

35 minutes from Milcowie B&B, this is a must-see experience. Look up at the sheer rock face and other wilderness highlights, magnificent cliff top views. Explore rocky river beds and experience the diverse wild life they have to offer.

An easy hike with a short but strenuous climb to the lookout. 

BOOLEROO CENTRE

Rural service town with a impressive Steam and Traction Museum housing a collection of engines. 50 minutes from Milcowie, ‘Booleroo’ is the Aboriginal word for ‘plenty’ and the area is famed for its constant battles against drought.

WILMINGTON TOY MUSEUM

“Definitely a must stop! This man is passionate about toys and it will break your heart how many toys we had that we played in the sand with, that are now so precious!! WANDERAH: Gumby’s Wildlife Sanctuary

Gumby’s are a registered charity and sanctuary for orphaned and injured wildlife, a safe place for them to live and grow. We release what we are able to, the rest live with us. An easy 20 min drive from Milcowie BB.

PORT GERMEIN

Sleepy Spencer Gulf port with the longest jetty in Australia at 1.5 km’s! Port Germain also holds a foreshore market twice every month including fresh produce, craft, bric-a-brac, tasty treats, a bargain or a ride on the Crab Train, this event will have something for everyone.
